I agree; what straw man? he was merely attacking the opinion of this one man, in no way misrepresenting it and not claiming it to be indicative of an entire group.

Because Taoists are not trying to dominate the government and use it to proselytize to us.

Nicely said NSC.

I got tired of people asking why don't you leave them be? If it makes them happy what's the problem?

I wrote this little rant and reading it usually does the trick.

Interesting, I ran into your videos on YouTube and must say truly did enjoy them. Normally I wouldn't bother with more than a thank you, but this question hit home since Taoism is a cornerstone of my life. I figured I'd add a little history to the discussion.
Taoism has in the past become a belief system that has caused war, during the end of the Han Dynasty in China. While there are many people like myself who find peace and guidance in the teachings of Taoist philosophers, Taoism like any other belief can become very dangerous if the believers start to think of themselves as some how superior to those who don't believe. Simply look at the Yellow scarves rebellion if you doubt it.
The central concept of Taoism is to gain harmony with one's environment and if such an non-aggressive concept can be turned into violence then any concept can become violent should it's followers begin think of themselves as special as opposed to non-believers in the concept.
It is precicely this reason that we need people like you Nonstampcollector who can take an outsiders look at the situation and show how the base concept is being corrupted and bringing harm to humanity as a whole.
It is with a humble heart that I hope should Taoism ever reach a stage where it again becomes harmful to humanity that there will be people like you to call believers out on it and try to remind us that we are all just human.

Aye, but the Yellow Scarves Rebellion was more political than religious. The idea is that many of the people who followed the Yellow Scarves were not well-versed in the religious teachings, hence their comparatively violent and extreme actions: their leader Zhang Jiao died before he could explain Taoism thoroughly to his followers. Instead they reacted to the sociopolitical problems of the time (government corruption, widespread famine, many parts of China were unable to express their concerns to the Emperor as they were droned out by corrupt officials and a bureaucracy that favored larger, mostly Northern cities).

When people of a religion fail to properly discuss the tenants and morality of that religion, and instead conduct violence and cruel acts in that religion's name that blatantly disregard the actual moral guidance expressed through that religion, they express the worst aspects of manipulating the masses and propaganda. This has happened to Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, you name it. Taoism, during the Yellow Scarves Rebellion, was no different, although one could argue that the Yellow Scarves would have many good reasons for objecting to their government at the time.

Anyway, thanks a bunch, NonStampCollector, I personally love your work. It's quite thoughtful and has frequently helped me come to terms with certain Christians who harass others and attempt to convince them that they are somehow evil abominations who are a threat to the universe because these "heathens" fail to believe in The One True God. Your work is very insightful, and I hope to see more of it in the near future!
