Isn't the virgin birth an invention long after the event to try and show Jesus was like other gods of the time, like Mithras, all born of virgins?

It seems women can't be or do supernatural things, only have supernatural things done to them.

I suppose if it could be conclusively proved to be a supernatural event that would entail the possibility of supernatural events in general. It wouldn't prove he was the son of God but would add weight to the claim.

Once we allow magic, then anything goes. How could a god create the entire universe in 6 days? Magic! How could all the animals fit on the ark? Magic! How could Jesus be a Jewish zombie? Magic! How could a god know the thoughts of over 7 billion people at all times and without missing anything? Magic!!!

Was just talking about this with my girlfriend the other day. Even if you let them have their claims about the universe needing a god (too complex, fine tuning, etc) and even let them have all the miracles in the bible, Christians still don't have any proof that their Jesus is really a god, or the only god.

I have not ever run into this claim for Jesus. Or perhaps, I have never listened properly as I think the claim of a virgin birth is ridiculous. I have however debated the claim "is virgin birth possible", but that was purely on academic grounds, as there has been some pseudo science and faulty science that says its possible in humans.

Come to think of it, doesn't modern technology make virgin birth possible? Wouldn't IFV work just as well on a virgin as it would with any other woman? So technically you could set this up, create a child, and then call him the son of god! =P

Though actually Christians don't generally treat the virgin birth as the main "proof" of Jesus' divinity. They're much more likely to cite his resurrection, his healings, maybe the transfiguration, etc..

1. The only way a virgin birth is at all possible - and it hasn't been done - is to try and persuade a human cell to change to be the equivalent of a human zygote, the fertilized ovum. As far as I know this has not been done in any species. It is certainly not IVF anyway.

2. Christians are entitled to their opinion but the fact remains that for Christians living at the time Mark wrote (c 70CE) there was no knowledge of a virgin birth. In fact, the whole idea, from the 2nd century comes fro the mistranslate of Isaiah from Hebrew into Greek. In fact Isaiah, in Hebrew, has 'young woman' which is certainly not the same as virgin for which a different word would be used. Oddly, it even detracts from Jesus claim to be the Messiah as it deprives him of his like to David and Solomon, which the OT predicts would be the lineage of the Messiah, which could only be passed on by Joseph.
